Though lava flows are one of the primary impacts of volcanic eruptions, they are slow and predictable enough that in some cases they can actually be deflected. Construction of walls, hydraulic chilling, and bombing are methods that have been used. The best way to minimize an eruption, however, is through monitoring of volcanic activity, with ample warning given to people to simply move out of the way.
