There are several rating systems such as LEED and Green Globes that can quanitativly measure the water and energy savings the desgin of building produces. If you aren’t looking to become certified by either of these methods, you can still use their practices to determine what you are saving by keeping track of the location your materials come from, if they’re rapidly renewable, comparing energy use between old and new appliances, water usage between old and new plumbing systems, are your producing any or all of your own energy through alternative sources, and ensuring that your house is properly insulated. You can also grow your own vegetables and be sure to recycle and reuse. These methods will ensure sustainability and will show a comparable drop in electricity and water use between houses of equal size.
