Vinegar is made by oxidizing ethanol. Any kind of ethanol, including corn ethanol, can be used. The ethanol fuel you use in your car, however, has other chemicals added into it that are toxic to humans, so do not attempt to make vinegar out of gasoline.
Vinegar can be made from any sugar-containing fruit using a fermentation process in which yeast is used as a catalyst for converting sugars acetic acid.
