Sea floor spreading supports what geologists refer to as plate tectonic, as well as continental drift. We know the seafloor is spreading due to the following evidence: sampling the basalt where seafloor spreading occurs has shown that the basalt gets younger the closer to the mid-ocean ridge we get. Also, paleomagnetism has shown that the reversals in polarity are recorded in the basaltic rocks, and that there is a pattern in this record, which is conducive to seafloor spreading.
