How do we find the source of groundwater contamination?

Well, usually the ground water can be tested and you can figure out from what the contaminants are what the likely sources are. For example, near a chicken poultry farm you might find groundwater with an excess of nitrogen in it and conclude that the farm is the source because chicken excrement is high in nitrogen content. If there is nuclear waste or radio-active materials in it it probably came from a nuclear reactor. If there is too much mercury in it maybe there is a coal plant nearby or an old thermometer disposal location.
