This depends on your local government or utility company. For example Southern California Edison will charge $50 to pick up old refrigerators.
Last month, Fox News did a feature on this matter. A video about what Southern California Edison does to recycle old refrigerators is available at the link below. What the company does is pick up your fridge, take it to their plant, remove the rubber and plastic parts, crush it, and sell the remains as scrap metal. Some have even created other projects out of the scrap metal produced in the process.
