The clean up of toxic waste sites in the US are governed by a 1980 law entitled Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act or CERCLA. CERCLA and common law cases have dictated the nature in which toxic sites are handled, including the funding of the project and the proper procedures for sterilization. Acting out of the EPA, the statue is employed in just about every Superfund site in the United States.
