The first step is to determine who will clean the mercury – you or a professional. If it is a small amount of mercury that is not widely spread, and if it is not on a pourous material, you can clean it up yourself. Otherwise it is recommended that you call a professional. Do not use a vacuum to clean a mercury spill, as the heat will increase the amount of mercury vapor in the air. Brooms and mops should also not be used, as they can spread the mercury around.
If you determine that you can clean the mercury spill, the appropriate steps can be found here. Otherwise, you can check your phone book for hazardous waste removal services, or environmental engineers, who will assist you with cleaning the spilled mercury.
