How do the watches that don’t need batteries work?

There’s two ways that I know of, the first of which is a small photovoltaic cell, similar to a solar powered calculator – The other way is through winding, and is the way that watches and clocks worked mechanically for generations before the use of electricity, where potential energy is stored in a spring – This has since been imporved on, and self winding watches have been created which use the motion of your wrist to wind the watch.

Besides battery powered watches, there are light powered watches and watches that need to be wound. Light powered watches operate by a light-absorbing receptor located under the dial. The watch converts the energy from the light and stores it in a battery that allows the watch to work at night and in dark places.
