How do unstable atoms become stable?

Unstable atoms are in that state because they have unpaired electrons in their outermost orbitals.  Each orbital has space for a certain amount of electrons and the outermost orbitals are involved in chemical reactions (it gets more complicated with hybrid orbitals).  Basically, unstable atoms become stable when the radical electrons are either paired or released from the orbital.
