how do trees know to grow up?

Trees, as all plants, are “photophilic,” meaning that they respond to light stimulus. Specifically, plants grow toward their strongest light sources. For trees growing outside that source would of course be the sun who rays are strongest when it is directly over head. This coupled with the fact that trees in a forest must grow out of the shadows of neighbouring trees, trees naturally grow up.
