How do trade barriers increase greenhouse gas emissions?

Actually, trade barriers incentivate trading within a country, as opposed to global trade. As long as companies within a country produce in a way which as enviromnetally friendly as companies abroad, then it will be more environmentally friendly to buy domestically (all other things held constant). This is because, instead of having to ship goods around the world, casuing pollution along the way, domestically produced goods have a shorter distance to travel, and therefore lead to less pollution
