They can work in one of two ways.  The first way is by reflecting a victim’s heat back to their body to keep them warm.  The other way is by deflecting the sun’s rays and heat in order to prevent dehydration, sun burn, and overheating.  They are also waterproof and weatherproof.

As you know, clothes keep you warm by trapping your bodies heat. The more clothes you have hot, the higher percentage of heat is trapped, making you feel warmer. A mylar blanket does the same thing but much more effectively. 90% of your bodies heat is reflected back to you when a mylar blanket is wrapped around you. The Mylar blanket is made from a sheet of plastic coated with metal and is therefore highly reflective.
