How do they go about removing a dam once it has been constructed?

Each dam installation is a distinct engineering feat. So the removal of the dam is planned as a separate and distinct instance. However, some similarities between removals exist. Each removal process has to follow NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) and environmental impact statements are filed with various options for removal. After the public comment period, the agency spearheading the removal tries to choose the option with the lowest environmental impact.
