Mummification can only occur in very specific circumstances – they are mostly in the Northern part of Europe near bodies of salt water. When the peat in these bogs replaces itself, humic acid (called bog acid) is released. The acids, which have a similar pH to vinegar, preserve human bodies like fruit is preserved by pickling. They are also generally anaerobic, which prevents decay.
