Caffeine is a stimulant. Drinking caffeinated drinks on a consistent basis can cause your brain to “expect” that caffeine. A sudden loss of that caffeine (i.e. by no longer drinking the caffeinated beverage) might cause sudden drowsiness and a lack of energy. Thus, you become dependent on the caffeine to keep the same energy level.
Sodas that have caffeine in them can cause this, as can the misuse of caffeine tablets (like No-Doz).
