How do so many animals die in zoos every year?

Most animals are not meant to be kept in captivity. Stress from being in constant exposure to humans can cause animals at zoos to change their behavior, from sleeping patterns to feeding habits. Also, zoos cannot completely replicate an animal’s natural environment, adding additional stress on the animal. In addition, unclean conditions and the spread of disease is a major killer of captive animals.
