Smokestack scrubbers reduce pollution by combining calcium oxide with sulfur dioxide from coal. This creates a semi-liquid material made up of calcium sulfite which moves to the bottom of the scrubber and is removed. Carbon from the coal combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, which is what is released. Scrubbers help stop sulfur from polluting the atmosphere but carbon dioxide is still released.
