How do the Smithsonian’s NMAFA Education Department programs benefit communities?

The education department at NMAFA conducts workshops for families and school groups to learn about African culture, art and literature and also sponsors performing arts.  Like any museum, its power is in increasing knowledge and understanding of our own and others’ cultures.

Beyond its capacities as the education department at a museum, it has also undertaken a partnership with the Ideal Academy Charter School to teach the children about South African art so they can create a mural on a blank wall.  This combines learning, cultural appreciation, art and pride in the children’s own school.
