Smart meters measure the amount of electricity being used (or being inputed) at a given point in a grid, and then send that information back to a central database. This information can be used to help individuals realize and then curb their usage, to develop “smart grids” that are more sensitive to demands and therefore more efficient, and to make it easier for utilities to keep track of their entire grid.
