How do scientists prove or disprove theories of how the earth looked so long ago?

Scientists are able to examine rocks, down to their chemical compositions.  They can match different rock layers in different areas, and can reconstruct past environments and past climates.  A past environment is locked into the rocks for geologists to discover.  Some rocks are specifically from a marine environment, and others from desert environment, etc.  They are able to date rocks to see how old they are, and then with many different samples, reconstruct what an area looked like and for approximately how long.
