How do scientists predict tsunamis?

Tsunamis are predicted with the seismometer in both Japan and the United States. When the seismometer detects a large, shallow earthquake under the ocean, a warning is issued to the surrounding coastlines. While this system is imperfect because not every oceanic earthquake leads to a tsunami, it does allow for ample warning time just in case.
