How do scientists model river erosion?

Scientists use Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, to model all kinds of situations involving both physical and social sciences. This software allows you to input many data layers and use all kinds of tools to interpret what will happen. It then shows a physical representation of the data. GIS is a complicated but versatile tool. Before this software, one way scientists studied processes such as river erosion was to create real models. One such model is the Bay Model, which is a realistic, walk-through model of the San Francisco Bay Delta region created by the Army Corps of Engineers. This model is open to the public and is impressive to see.
