Geologists have worked out very clever ways of studying what lies beneath the surface of our planet’s crust. Seismic waves are their main source of information. The earth naturally produces seismic waves, which we feel or see via earthquake or volcano. By studying variations in the pressure and movements of these waves, geologists have determined that the earth has several layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, upper mantle, aesthenosphere, and finally the lithosphere (the crust!).
