How do scientists do research on whales without capturing them?

Often times they capture the whale briefly.  This allows them to tag them, in other words, embed a tracking device in the whale.  They can then track the whale via satellite to learn about things such as mating patterns.  This device is very similar to the microchip used on dogs and cats.
