The tanks that saltwater fish survive in are designed to mimic their natural habitats. Salt and other additives found at fish stores are added to fresh water to make the water the right consistency. There are high tech filters and lights that mimic the natural environment. If you live in a tropical place (Hawaii or Florida) you can use salt water directly from the ocean. People with salt water tanks spend a lot of time taking care of their tanks to create these artificial habitats, and it is a fun hobby.
Saltwater fish can survive in tanks only if the water is kept at optimum conditions. The salinity must be maintained, there are more systems to worry about than just a pump and cleaning the tank in saltwater tanks. The fish must be fed its recommended diet also, but saltwater tanks can offer a vast array of tropical and exotic fish as pets.
