Salt flats form when the waves of a body of water begin to recede and disappear. After a period of time, large amounts of concentrated, dissolved minerals are deposited into the soils that form the watershed of what will eventually become a salt flat. Some of the minerals that are often found in this type of land formation are gypsum, halite, potassium, and magnesium.
