How do the rocky mountains effect the climate in the surrounding lowlands?

The main effect of the Rocky Mountains if that it blocks rain clouds coming inland from the Pacific Ocean. The results of this are two fold: first, the west coast is wetter because the clouds are forced to release much of their moisture before crossing the mountains, and second, the great plains are drier because they are deprived of that very same rain.
