Since many rocks are formed by cooling magma, or other violent processes microscopic pits are left in them. After years of erosion, these pits become holes, as the elements take their toll on the rock, which is unable to run away.

In many cases with volcanic rocks, gases are trapped within the molten magma and when the rock solidifies, the gas bubbles become the empty spaces in the solid rock.
