How do power plants conserve water?

Coal fired power plants boil water to run turbines that in turn generate electricity. The steam that runs through the turbine is then condensed again to run the whole process again. This saves the input of more water for the boiling process but often water from lakes or rivers are used to cool the steam and can get contaminated.
