Plastic bags are made from petroleum and natural gas, which are nonrenewable fossil fuels. The production of plastic bags not only takes away our limited resources but also generates significant pollution during the production process. These bags take up to a thousand years to break down so the waste stays in our landfills for a long time.
As far as local environments I know that these bags are littered all the time (I know because I can see these things laying all over streets and sidewalks) Its true that it takes forever for them to breakdown, and so when they are littered, they are just going to stay there until someone picks it up.
