How do pesticides affect soil in the long term?

Although pesticides are primarily used to kill pests, they provide a dangerous effect to the soil as well. Many pesticides kill micro-organisms in soil, which are essential for breaking down organic material and helping plants grow, as they depend on these organisms for nutrients. Some of the chemicals may even stay in the soil for years, ultimately lessening the quality of the soil. Essentially, it takes years before the micro-organisms that aid plant life to thrive in the soil again.
