One way to think about it is that we have an internal clock. Scientists have discovered that these biological clocks drive what we call the circadian rhythm; which runs roughly on a 24 hour biochemical, physiological, and behavioral basis. What is interesting is that this cycle is primarily dictated by light and darkness (though there are obvious biological factors included). This circadian rhythm is closely tied to sleep, because it simply tells our bodies when it’s time to rest.
