Denmark has begun burning trash to produce electricity. These energy plants contain filters that prevent toxins from escaping into the atmosphere. Denmark has 29 plants, and europe has 400, as of spring 2010. Once again the U.S. is being left behind in science and innovation by more progressive countries.
Europe doesn’t have nearly as much space as the U.S. for landfills, so they end up incinerating a lot of their landfill waste. As bialowieza mentioned, Denmark and other countries in Europe are looking for ways to minimize the environmental impact and increase the efficiency of waste incineration.
