Organic farmers keep soil fertile through several methods. The tilth (physical structure of the soil) of the soil is kept loose so water and nutrients can reach the plant roots. Rotation of crops help keep the soil healthy and prevents over harvesting and plowing is used on growing or recently harvested plants. Farmers also add organic nutrients to the soil such as compost or decomposing plants and animal urine and manure. Organic farmers generally don’t produce as much as traditional farmers, but the work is also much more extensive.
