The reactor and all subsequent radiation emitting equipment is incased within layers of steel, water tanks, and polyethylene to protect the crew and the environment, including people on land, from harmful radiation.  A nuclear submarine’s used fuel has traces of uranium in it and is taken to the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho.  When a submarine is decommissioned, reactor compartments are dismantled and taken to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington.
