The Arirang Festival takes place in the May Day stadium in Pyongyang and is marked by large-scale and highly choreographed artistic and gymnastic performances. One of the more noteworthy of these performances is a large scale “card stunt” in which thousands of school children hold up a colored card to form various pictures and designs. Such “collective art” is related in no small way to the ideas of Juche socialism and state solidarity.
