Mutations can occur many different ways. First of all, when DNA is being copied the ribosome may simply make a mistake and attach the wrong nucleotide. Other mutations occur when two chromosomes exchange DNA by accident. Besides these internal factors your environment can also cause genetic mutation, everything from sunlight and microwave radiation to cigarette smoke and other chemicals.
