How do motion sensors work to save energy in a home?

Motion sensors detect the movement of a person in a room, and automatically switch the lights on. After a set period of time in which no movement occurs, the lights turn back off. In other words, installing a motion sensor helps ensure that lights do not get left on necessarily for a long amount of time, because they will turn off on their own after a while. If you and the other people in your house are very vigilant already about turning off the light when you leave a room, it’s probably not necessary to install a motion sensor (after all, the device itself uses a certain amount of energy that will be wasted if it’s not needed). If lights often get left on for long periods of time, however, a motion sensor might be helpful.
