How do most lakes stay filled?

Most lakes stay filled from tributaries feeding into them. Rainfall over a large land area gradually accumulates and masses into rivers, streams, and brooks, which then feed into our lakes. As many large lakes in the U.S. are man made, we also control the water level by opening and closing dams, so as to let excess water flow out and continue its natural course which eventually leads to the ocean.
