How do microfilaments function in the cytoskeleton of a cell?

Microfilaments are thread-like protein fibers made predominantly of actin, a contractile protein. It is microfilaments association with a protein called myosin that is responsible for muscle contraction. Microfilaments are also involved in certain cellular movements: gliding, contraction, and cytokinesis.
