How do I safely dispose medications?

That depends on the medications. Some can safely be thrown in the trash, others get flushed down the toilet, and a few should go to specialized drop sites. Check out the FDA website below to figure out the appropriate destination for your meds.

There are many different options to dispose of old or unused medications, but some are more environmentally-friendly than others. For example, The FDA advises that certain painkillers (e.g, OxyContin, Morphine, Percocet) be flushed down the toilet instead of thrown in the trash. You should check the website for more details on how to dispose of different medicines.

you should call you local drug store or pharmacy and ask for a drop off receptacle  for old/unused prescriptions. Many stores now have them. Most waste water treatment plants cannot treat water tainted with medications, so it is not advisable to flush them down your toilet. There are many cases of ocean and river water that have all kinds of pharmacy medications in them, which pose a risk to our environment and future generations of our children.
