One way to make your own seed mat would be to use dye-free, heavy-duty paper towels. Mix a thick paste with flour and water, spreading this on the unrolled paper towel. Place the seeds at whatever distance apart that it recommends on the seed packet. You can roll it up and store it once dry. Loosen the soil, unroll the prepared mat, and cover it with compost at the depth recommended.
