It is very diffecult to know how ‘free range’ your free range chickens may be. The labels used on eggs to say if they are free range are not very specific. The USDA only requires that the door to the chicken coop be open for 5 minutes a day to allow the chickens to go outside to claim to be free range. It says that if they choose not to go outside thats their problem. The only way to truly know how much time they are spending outdoors is to ask the producer. Try buying eggs from your local farmers market so you can talk to the farmers-or at least people who work much closer to the farm than a grocery store clerk- to find out their production processes.
