How do homing pigeons have the ability to find their home from very far distances?

Most researchers ascribe to the “map and compass” model of homing pigeon navigation.  The compass allows for the pigeons to orientate themselves while the map gives allows them to figure out their location relative to where they want to go.  Their ability to figure out their location might have to do with the Earth’s magnetic field.
