How do home foreclosures hurt the environment?

Essentially any human activity can be construed as “hurting” the environment if you build a long enough chain of causality:

Foreclosures = people are 1) using energy (driving cars, taking buses) looking for new places to live, 2) occupying other housing while the foreclosed place may stand empty, eventually to fall into disrepair, theft, or vandalism. Or many other possible consequences, all of which are quite a reach.

Along with many other questions, such as what is the best pooper scooper for the environment, your energies would be better served by addressing things that have significant impact: driving cars and burning coal. If all Americans actually did something notable about those two things, it would make a little difference, at least until China and India get close to US consumption rates for oil.
