Life inhabits volcanic islands in a number of ways. Amphibious sea creatures can venture onto the island themselves from the ocean. Avian animals such as birds can inhabit the island due to their ability to fly. Any other animal would have to be brought to the island, by humans or another means, either intentionally or unintentionally. Through out history man has been known to bring different animals with him/her as they populated different islands throughout the world. These animals were necessary for food to sustain life in these new places. Some species, such as the rat, were able to stay hidden on the boat and come ashore without notice during landing.
