How do seeds germinate?

Important factors for seed germination include temperature, water, oxygen, and light (or darkness, in some cases).  Mature seeds are very dry and require a large amount of water for germination.  Oxygen is crucial in the seed’s metabolism.  Temperature affects cellular metabolic and growth rates.  Light or darkness is an environmental trigger for germination in some seeds.
