How do gamma ray bursts affect the earth?

Gamma ray bursts are cosmic bursts of light can destory life on planets a distance thousands of light years.  Thankfully the gamma bursts scientists are discovering are so far away that they do not affect earth in any significant way.  Scientists also say our galaxy is also not prone to these types of bursts, as the condition that allows these bursts is not present.  Good thing for us!
