How do four-wheel drives differ from other cars?

Without getting too complicated and into the mechanics of it all, Four Wheel Drive (fwd) vehicles are typically less fuel efficient, more complicated to repair and maintain, and are more expensive than the All Wheel Drive options. With this said, 4wd cars tend to be safer because of their abilities to get through snow and mud. There is an in between option, the Part Time 4wd.
